Keymod solves that and due to the slots also brings the added benefit of less weight.

With the exception of my target AR with bull barrel, I prefer the rest of them as light as possible as there is really only upside to a light weight rifle.Īll my other pre-Keymod free float hand guards work perfectly fine and won't be replaced, but none of the pic rail attachment points are compatible with each other as they are all different brands. I prefer narrow (1.5") slick sided free float hand guards with only the pic sections I need, which is usually just one 2" section on top to hold the front sight (if I don't use a front sight/gas block combo). I irk when I see people mounting 10"-15" quad rails on their ARs, but if that's the style that they like and want then good for them.Įxactly right.

I don't plan to load up a load of crap on my rail, but if I wanted to then I have the option.

I for one did not understand get the whole concept of keymods, but now it makes perfect sense. If you don't like the keymod style then fine, but thread capping with your nonsense is retarded.

Oh yeah, and you can buy rails to attach stuff to it! I just wish they made a 20" version." Pretty sure if Noveske marketed a paper towel tube with velcro strips to attach accessories, more than half the people on here would be like "Yeah, I totally get it! It's so small that my tiny hands can wrap around it twice, and it's light weight and faster than a tacticool mall ninja operator Keymod that I want so badly to be but try so hard to disassociate with. Except the Keytards are the tactifools now. But since manufacturers are going to keep making quad rails for some time going forward, that's a non-issue. If every manufacturer decides to make only keymod handguards going forward, it doesn't really affect anyones current build, and won't really have an affect going forward unless you're really desperate for a quad rail in the future. Is it worth considering if you wanted a free float handguard on a future build? Sure. It's not really even an "upgrade" either.

Do people need to upgrade just for the sake of doing it? No. The lack of understanding of keymod, and the bitterness about it is just silly. Why would you want a manufacturer specific piece of rail to attach to some random slot pattern cut into the forend? As it is, that forend is barely adding anything to the outside diameter of the barrel while allowing versatile placement of accessories(WHICH AREN'T REQUIRED) using any manufacturers keymod accessories, or any manufacturers keymod attached rail section. You wouldn't want a quad rail just to mount 1 or 2 items. You wouldn't catch me forking over the cash for an AI AX chassis. You couldn't get a quad rail to be that slim(and no, that's not my rifle. Manufacturers don't have to design the forend around the pic rails being on the sides(I've never seen an 8 sided quad rail, not even sure it would be possible since you'd need to leave enough room between the rail sections for accessories to attach, it'd probably end up 4" wide). You get a slick sided forend that doesn't require being covered in plastic rail covers(although people still do it anyway). You can attach your currently owned accessories with pic rail sections that are compatible with any manufacturer's keymod forend. It's an open standard that doesn't cost manufacturers some goofy licensing fees to implement.

The backlash(not sure if it's caused by ignorance, or just people "set in their ways" from a whole 5 years ago) over keymod is mindboggling.

Unless you really want to go back to the days of needing a serial port for your mouse, AT connector for the keyboard, parallel port for a cable with a centronics plug on the other end for the printer, a gameport adapter for a joystick, and who knows what other random connection standard for any other devices you might have. Hell, it's the same reason USB became a standard for computers. Is that clear enough now? There's simply no reason for manufacturers to not switch to a standardized accessory attachment system that doesn't require 3-5 feet of pic rail that will go unused or needs to be covered up with even more crap(nevermind the actual bulk of the rails themselves) compared to a slick forend that doesn't require going back to the manufacturer a year later to figure out what thread pitch they use for their screws or rig some hokey nut to the underside of the rail and hope everything lines up with your rail section in the spot you want. Which are also likely not compatible with this: Because rail sections and accessories for this:
